What Do You Believe In?

UI/UX Design - Creative Technology - Website - 2024
What Do You Believe? (2024) is an interactive experience developed for Parsons Major Studio class as part of a design challenge to conceive and create a project in just one day.

This project forms a virtual night sky where users can explore and engage with diverse personal beliefs, fostering meaningful connections through non-religious spirituality. It highlights my technical expertise in creative coding and user experience design, blending these skills to deliver a unique interactive experience. By integrating complex user inputs with a seamless visual interface, I crafted an engaging and playful environment.

Data Collection

Initial Data Collection:

I began the project by gathering insights from individuals in my network, asking them whether they believed in anything and inviting them to share their beliefs.

This included in-person conversations as well as distributing a poll across my social media platforms. I collected a diverse range of responses, encompassing spiritual, personal, religious, mythical, and scientific perspectives.

The aim of this project was to foster a sense of exploration, creating opportunities for people to connect unexpectedly with the varied forms of faith and belief present in the world around them.

Visual Development:

I then curated and compiled imagery to shape the overarching visual aesthetic for the project.

My goal was to design a web experience that resembled an immersive night sky, featuring dark backgrounds accented by moments of illuminated text and shadow.

I was particularly drawn to the aesthetics of light leaks and illumination, as they symbolically reflect how faith—whether religious or not—can serve as a source of clarity and guidance.

Coding and Web Development:
I developed the project using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, starting with the core elements and then focusing on enhancing the user experience.  A key feature was the illumination effect, where the user’s cursor highlights and reveals sections of the screen, making the text legible and adding an immersive, interactive quality.

Overall, the project successfully achieved its goals, creating a visually impactful and technically efficient experience.

With more time, I would have explored developing a mobile version, enhancing interactivity through touch input for a more versatile and immersive design.
